OK, so I'm a little slow on the uptake here...

Seemingly, the Detroit show is trying to express its importance and dominance (at least in concept cars and new vehicle introductions) among the other big shows in L.A., Chicago and NYC. I don't think it's as much that the Detroit name is an embarrassment (although our fine young mayor is certainly attempting to make it so), as it is an act of puffery to remind the bigger (in square footage) shows and the rest of the U.S. who's boss, and to place the Detroit show in the same pantheon as Frankfort and Tokyo.

Too bad we can't hold the show in August or September...
