Well, if you've stopped by recently, you may have noticed two things:
1. Where the hell is Adam?
2. What are these new photo albums?
One thing at a time, possums...
To begin with, my partner and I enjoyed a nice warm-weather break, courtesy of a six--night stay in Puerto Vallarta. We actually visited PV two years ago, staying at the Grand Marival all-inclusive resort. Given the nice weather and good value, we decided a return was in order; this time, however, there were a few changes:
- We decided to vacation with another couple: my friend Chris, with whom I used to work, and his new beau, Jim
- We relocated from the resort area of town (a thirty-minute cab ride from downtown) to the hotel district, about five minutes from downtown on foot
Once again, we booked through Apple Vacations, staying at the Buenaventura, another all-inclusive (and, yes, primarily straight) resort. And, just like two years ago, we enjoyed delightful weather (80-85, slightly humid) and good food, with the bonus of a great location--right on the beach. We also found ourselves (relatively speaking) in the minority, in that we regularly tipped the staff; soon enough, the waiters were bringing us two drinks at a time ("Happy hour!") and the famous "gin and tonic--with extra gin."
The one night we decided to check out the nightlife, we headed to the Zona Romantica and a little place called The Palm. The highlight was their drag show, which included Ida Slapter (doing an impressive Barbra impersonation), as well as Eartha Kitt and Liza impersonators; the Liza was particularly hilarious, as her particular Liza was stone-drunk, splashing 'Absolut' on the crowd from a bottle she waved around. You'll find her picture (along with my partner and Jim) in the album.
We also discovered that we do, in fact, play well with others; the two of us spent six days with Chris and Jim and didn't wind up at each others' throats. In fact, at some point, Jim started referring to my partner as "Lucy"--which, of course, made Jim "Ethel", me "Ricky" (with my showbiz background), and leaving Chris (with his somewhat grumpier personality) as "Fred."
The only fly in the ointment was our trip home. We were supposed to connect via Houston, but weather issue meant that we landed too late to make our connection; the nice people at Continental booked us on another flight. Unfortunately, a security breach at the airport meant that our luggage made the flight but we didn't. Eventually, they booked us via Newark--arriving there at 2am and leaving at 6.50am. And if you think that spending the night in Newark Airport sounds glamorous, think again; at least we found a 24-hour McDonald's.
Next up, vacation-wise, we are Big Apple-bound, where I'll hit the NY Auto Show while my partner sightsees. Stay tuned...
